Legal assistance with your matter

Legal Aid ​​NSW

Legal Aid NSW provides legal information to people with legal problems in NSW through its LawAccess NSW service. They can help you understand your legal problem and connect you with services that may be able to help. Call 1300 888 529.

Legal Aid's Tenancy Appeals Advice Line also provides free legal advice to tenants who want to appeal an NCAT tenancy decision. Call the NCAT Housing Appeals Advice Hotline on (02) 9219 5800.

Home Building Advocacy Se​​rvice (HoBAS)

The Home Building Advocacy Service provides free legal information and referrals to NSW consumers with home building disputes. It may also provide legal advice and representation in certain circumstances. Call (02) 8833 0994.

Find Legal Answers is a free online legal information resource for people living in NSW provided by the State Library of NSW.

Seniors Rights Ser​​​vice

The Seniors Rights Service provides free and confidential legal advice, aged care advocacy, and support to seniors across NSW. Call 1800 424 079.

Aboriginal Tenants A​​​​dvice and Advocacy Services

NSW Aboriginal Tenants Advice Services provide free advice and advocacy for Aboriginal tenants living in NSW.

ASIC is Australia's corporate regulator. They provide information for companies, businesses and consumers. Search the ASIC Registers for current information about companies and business names. Call 1300 300 630.

Building Commission NSW ​

Building Commission NSW helps consumers and building professionals resolve home building disputes. Before applying to NCAT about a home building dispute, you must generally lodge a complaint with Building Commission NSW and take part in its dispute resolution process. Call 13 27 00.

Housing Appeals Committe​​e

The Housing Appeals Committee reviews internal appeal decisions made by Homes NSW and registered community housing providers. Call 1800 629 794.

NSW Fair Tra​​​ding

NSW Fair Trading provides information and assistance about consumer rights, renting and tenancy, motor vehicles, strata and community living. Call 13 32 20.

NSW Health Care Complai​​​​nts Commission (HCCC)

The Health Care Complaints Commission deals with complaints about health service providers in NSW. Call 1800 043 159.

NSW Ombudsma​​​​n

The NSW Ombudsman handles complaints about NSW government agencies, local councils and NSW Government-funded community service providers. Call 1800 451 524.

NSW Small Business Comm​​​​issioner

The NSW Small Business Commissioner provides information and assistance to small businesses and mediation services for retail tenancy and other business disputes. Call 1300 795 534.

NSW Trustee and Gua​​​rdian

The NSW Trustee and Guardian provides wills and estate planning, deceased estate and financial management services. NCAT may appoint the NSW Trustee and Guardian as the financial manager for a person with a decision-making disability.

NCAT may also appoint the NSW Public Guardian as guardian for a person with a decision-making disability. The Public Guardian provides information and support to private guardians.

Victims Serv​​​ices

Victims Services provides information, advice and referrals to victims of crime in NSW. It may also provide access to counselling and financial assistance through the Victims Support Scheme. Call the Victims Access Line on 1800 633 063.

The Law Society of NSW provides an online directory of NSW practices and solicitors who hold a current practising certificate. 

Law Society of NSW Pro Bono Scheme

The Law Society’s Pro Bono Scheme  refers eligible applicants to volunteer solicitors who provide free or reduced-fee legal assistance.

Legal Assistance Referral Scheme (LARS)

The Legal Assistance Referral Scheme (LARS)  matches requests for legal assistance with barristers or mediators. To apply, you need a referral letter from a court or tribunal, legal practitioner or community legal centre.
