Appearing by video conference

NCAT can conduct hearings by video conference. Video conferencing allows people to attend a hearing from any location using their own device if approved by NCAT.

Tribunal etiquette and protocols must be observed as if you were appearing in person.

How do I join the video conference?

If an NCAT hearing is going to be conducted by video conference the link to attend the hearing is included in your notice of hearing.

You must open the link to the video conference 5 minutes before the time on the notice of hearing.

When will the video conference hearing start?

The Tribunal Member will start the video conference from the hearing room.  At the end of the hearing, the Tribunal Member will disconnect the video conference.

Am I permitted to record the hearing?

Parties and members of the public are not permitted to audio or video record the hearing, except as provided by section 9 of the Court Security Act 2005.

How to connect

Your computer, smart phone or tablet must have the current version of Safari or Google Chrome browser installed and reliable internet coverage.

Step 1: Click on the provided link 
5 minutes before your hearing click on the link on your notice of hearing or copy and paste the link provided into your internet browser.

Step 2: Enter your details 
Enter your full name the name of your firm/ organisation and click ‘Join meeting’.

Step 3: Allow access to microphone and camera
When prompted, allow access to your microphone and camera. 

You must keep your camera on during the hearing. Use the self-view option to check how other participants are seeing you. The camera needs to show your head and shoulders.

Testing your connection

NCAT recommends testing your connection before your hearing. 

NCAT may contact you to test by dialling into the hearing room. Registry staff will contact you to organise a time to test the connection.

Note: Your microphone and camera are auto-disabled when using the test link.

Video conference tips

Use the following tips to get the most of your hearing by video conference.

  • Test your connection at least once before the hearing to make sure your equipment is working
  • Participate from a quiet and private location
  • Minimise distractions such as using your keyboard and other devices
  • Mute your microphone when you are not talking
  • Do not interrupt or talk over other people in the hearing
  • If you lose your connection, close down the program and re-connect
